1. When to call 911?

In an emergency, dial 911.  An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from law enforcement, the fire department or an ambulance.  

Examples include: 

1. A fire
2. A crime, especially if in progress
3. A car crash, especially if someone is injured
4. A medical emergency, especially for symptoms that require immediate medical attention

2. Does my phone number and address show up when I dial 911?

This is dependent on a lot of factors. To be sure we are sending help to the right location, 911 call takers will ask for your address and phone number, every time. They will also ask additional questions to assist responding units. These questions do not slow down response times and may include:

1. The nature of the emergency
2. Details about the emergency, such as a physical description of a person who may have committed a crime, a description of any fire that may be burning, or a description of injuries or symptoms being experienced by a person having a medical emergency

The call-taker’s questions are important to get the right kind of help to you as quickly as possible.  Be prepared to follow any instructions the call-taker gives you.

3. Who do I call if my power goes out?

Thanks to La Plata Electric Association’s automated metering infrastructure, they usually know you have an outage as soon as you do.  As such, there is no special action you need to take to report your outage.  You DO still need to report your outage if you have opted out of this infrastructure.  Call LPEA anytime, day or night, at 970-247-5786, and select option “5” on the upfront menu to report.

4. Who do I call if I've lost my dog or animal?

All animals picked up by the Archuleta County Deputies are taken to the Humane Society located at 465 Cloman Boulevard. To check if your animal is there, call 970-731-4771. To report a lost dog or animal, please call our Dispatch Center at 970-731-2160
