[ARCHIVED] Snapshot - April 4, 2023 Regular Meeting

The original item was published from April 20, 2023 8:39 AM to April 20, 2023 8:42 AM

In the regular meeting of the Board of County Commissioners on April 4, 2023, many proclamations were declared, and some hot topics were discussed.

Public comment started off with a concerned citizen regarding local county roads, their repair and maintenance. All commissioners very much understand and sympathize with the road issues and commented that the road repair is a process and has many challenges. These challenges include the weather, vacant positions in Road & Bridge, access to materials and restrictions on tribal land.

Sexual Assault and Distracted Driving Awareness Month were both declared in Archuleta County for April 2023. While another proclamation declared the week of April 9-15, 2023, as National Public Safety Telecommunicators week to honor our very own Emergency Dispatchers.

Lyn Varrati was appointed to the Archuleta County Fair Board and 6 other community members were appointed to fill vacant positions of the Archuleta County Extension Advisory Committee.

The board approved a donation of ammunition to the Archuleta County Sheriff’s office from local resident, Jim Huffman. This donation provides cost savings by reducing the amount for purchasing ammunition. Jim Huffman and his family have been involved in supporting our local Sheriff’s office for years and we thank them for their support.

Additionally, the resolution to approve establishing the Archuleta County Public Health Agency and Transitional Board of Health was tabled until the next regular meeting (April 18, 2023) after a joint work session between the BoCC and the Transitional Advisory Committee (April 11, 2023).  Public comment was received and considered relating to this decision. Both Archuleta and La Plata Counties publicly declared in a joint resolution on November 15, 2022, to no longer participate as members of the SJBPH as of December 31, 2023. This decision will not change, and the Archuleta County Public Health Department will commence services beginning January 1, 2024. The BoCC’s responsibility is to balance competing values and interests and upholding the oath to serve the needs of Archuleta County citizens. The new Public Health Department will provide services deemed most beneficial to the citizens of Archuleta County, including the programs which are statutorily required.

With the importance of early childhood education, the BoCC approved to exempt the subdivision of property in order to deed land to the Archuleta County Education Center known as Wings Early Childhood Center, for the expansion to add additional classrooms, playgrounds and a commercial kitchen to support the needs of childcare in Archuleta County.

In the interest of affordable housing, the BoCC approved an agreement to abate or refund the county’s portion of property taxes to a 4-unit rental property on South 7th Street. In order to qualify for this waiver, the property owner will be required to meet certain criteria.
