ARCHULETA COUNTY AIRPORT
STEVENS FIELD - KPSO
In 2003, the Colorado Department of Transportation, Aeronautics Division, commissioned an extensive study of the economic impacts of Colorado airports. Using well-established econometric methods, the study measured the various types of economic impacts:
|
 |
-
On-airport impacts – payroll and operating expenditures by the airport, FBO, maintenance facilities, ground transportation, etc.
-
Visitor spending – financial transactions that occur off-airport and are associated with visitors to the area
-
Spin-off impacts – the recycling of dollars through the economy as an incremental dollar spent continues to move through the local economy
-
Airport dependent impacts – represents spending by area businesses that are dependent on an airport for various services and would relocate if the airport did not exist
The study presents these impacts in terms of the number of jobs created, the wages and benefits earned and the overall economic activity in the community. The results for the Archuleta County airport for the calendar year 2002 showed that our airport was responsible for supporting 357 jobs with wages in excess of $9 million and total economic activity of more than $23 million annually.
Travis Valllin, director of the Aeronautics Division of CDOT, was a guest at our March 16th airport advisory commission meeting. He outlined the methodology and validity of the results of the economic impact study. His key word was “defendable.” The study is valid and it is defendable! We can say with confidence that the community is far better off, enjoying $23 million in economic activity which would not exist without the airport.
And it is important to note that these economic benefits extend to every socioeconomic level in the community. From business owners to maids, cleaners, bartenders and servers; from general contractors to subcontractors to the guy pounding the nails; from the rental car company to the clerk collecting for the gas to fill it up, every participant in the local economy gains something. |
